During the recent 148th session of the WHO Executive Board Meeting, Member States passed a milestone resolution on oral health calling for the development of a global oral health strategy by 2022 and an action plan and monitoring framework for oral health, aligned with UHC and NCD agendas by 2023. The resolution highlights the prevalence of oral disease, with more than 3.5 billion people worldwide suffering from oral diseases closely linked to other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Most oral diseases share modifiable risk factors with other major NCDs, such as heart disease, cancer, lung diseases and diabetes. Clinical and public health research shows that individual, professional and community preventive measures are effective in preventing most oral diseases.

GSCF and its members support this global oral health strategy and the need for integrated approaches to health promotion and disease prevention based on common risk factors.
